"Quantitative analysis of optical imaging for Medicine and Biophysics"
Venice, - Palazzo Franchetti (S. Marco, 2847)
18-22 January, 2021
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the school will be held on line.
Flyer |
Topic
The quantitative analysis of the huge amount of data produced by traditional and innovative optical microscopy and spectroscopy techniques can dramatically improve our understanding of basic physiological phenomena and foster the application of innovative imaging approaches in medical diagnosis. The school will offer an overview of the foundations and applications of the most recent methods for quantitative analysis of data provided by modern optical and multimodal imaging. The goal is to deepen the technical details of the quantitative analysis through extended lectures by prominent researchers in the field, hands-on sessions and free informal discussion with the lecturers. The participation to the school is limited to 35 students.

The School will be held in the magnificent Palazzo Franchetti, the premises of the "Istituto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti" located in the historical centre of Venice, close to Canal Grande and Accademia (Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti).
The focus of the 2017 School is Time Resolved Methods in Biophysics:
The possibility of accessing structural, topological or spectroscopic information with the proper time resolution is at the basis of a variety of methods that are currently applied in biophysics. These methods allow unprecedented understanding of many biologically relevant processes such as mechanistics of biochemical reactions, energy transfer and fixation, protein folding, macromolecular conformational changes and cellular trafficking, to name just a few. This school proposes an overview on a selection of current spectroscopic, structural and microscopy methods that are inherently endowed with time resolution.

Cell adhesion to matrix, other cells, or pathogens plays a pivotal role in many crucial biological processes. Early macroscopic methods of quantifying adhesion led to the development of quantitative models of cell adhesion and migration. The more recent use of sensitive probes to manipulate adhesion proteins has quantified the necessary forces modulating the intermolecular adhesion, and revealed much greater functional diversity respect to population average measurements of cell adhesion. The school will treat theoretical and experimental methods that proved to be useful in identifying force-dependent molecular properties that are central to the biological activity of adhesion proteins.
